Why we keep growing Kala Namak rice

Kala Namak rice, also written Kalanamak and sometimes called Buddha rice, is a heritage, aromatic rice associated with Siddharthnagar and the wider Terai region of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Kalanamak rice of this region carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Its place in local memory is often told through the story of the Buddha and a gift of rice to the region, a cherished tradition that gives this grain meaning beyond the plate.

For the Pathak family, the story is personal too. We had land, knew this crop, and did not want to be the generation that let it disappear from our fields. Healing Grain grew from that decision: to sell what we can harvest, so the effort can continue without pretending it needs to become a mass-market business.

Keeping the grain alive comes first. Selling it comes second.

What makes this Kala Namak rice different

  • A traditional, non-hybrid crop. We grow from non-hybrid seed, with a crop cycle of around 160–180 days, depending on conditions.
  • A grain with its own character. Kala Namak is not basmati. It has a distinctive aroma and a softer, sometimes slightly sticky cooked texture.
  • Known by its place of origin. Our rice is grown on family land in Siddharthnagar, part of the historic eastern Uttar Pradesh and Terai growing region.
  • A real family harvest. We share what our own fields produce, in small batches, rather than presenting the crop as an unlimited commodity.
  • Gentle polishing. We keep polishing minimal to retain the grain’s natural character. The final appearance and texture can vary naturally between harvests.

The region’s Kalanamak heritage and growing history are documented by the Siddharthnagar District Administration. The GI registration applies to the defined geographical region and product—not as a separate certification of every individual pack.

Not just a bag of rice. A crop we choose to keep growing.

Many rice listings compete on price, volume or familiar basmati-style expectations. We take a different approach: tell you where our rice is grown, how long this traditional crop stays in the field, how it cooks, and when the next harvest is actually ready.

We will not call it basmati, promise identical grains in every batch, or claim a health result we have not tested. We would rather earn your trust with origin, honest expectations and a direct line to the family growing it.

A careful note on nutrition

The official Siddharthnagar district page publishes general nutrition and glycaemic-index information about Kalanamak rice. That is background information about the variety; it is not a laboratory result for Healing Grain’s upcoming harvest. We do not market this batch as “sugar-free”, or promise that it treats or controls diabetes, blood sugar or weight. People managing a medical condition should make food choices with their clinician or registered dietitian.

The fields behind the grain

These are photographs from our own growing journey, not stock images of someone else’s farm.

Fair to farmer. Fair to consumer.

A long-duration crop occupies the land for months and asks for patience from the grower. Our price needs to respect that work while giving you a clear picture of what you are paying for. We would rather explain the cost honestly than promise the cheapest rice.

How to cook Kala Namak rice

Kala Namak will not cook exactly like polished basmati, and it does not need to. Avoid prolonged soaking to start with, let it rest briefly after cooking, and adjust water to find the texture you enjoy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kala Namak rice available now?

No. Last season’s stock is sold out. The next harvest is expected around January 2027, depending on crop and weather conditions.

What will the 5 kg pack cost?

We expect the 5 kg pack of original Kala Namak rice to be ₹1,794, delivered across India. Last season’s 5 kg pack was ₹1,668. This is an indicative price, not an order or price guarantee, and we will confirm the final price in writing before accepting any payment.

Do I need to pay or commit now?

No. A harvest enquiry is free and carries no obligation. We will share an update as the crop approaches harvest, and you can decide then.

What is Kalanamak (Kala Namak) rice, and does it have a GI tag?

Kalanamak, also written Kala Namak and sometimes called Buddha rice, is a traditional aromatic rice of eastern Uttar Pradesh, with Siddharthnagar at its heart. Kalanamak rice of this region has a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Our rice is grown by our family in Siddharthnagar.

Is it hybrid rice?

No. We grow the traditional long-duration Kala Namak crop from non-hybrid seed, with a crop cycle of around 160–180 days depending on growing conditions.

Will it cook like basmati?

Not exactly. Kala Namak has its own grain character, distinctive aroma and softer, sometimes slightly sticky cooked texture. If you prefer a very separate, long basmati-style grain, this may be a different experience.

Is it low-GI or suitable for diabetes?

The Siddharthnagar District Administration publishes general GI and nutrition information about Kalanamak rice. We have not independently tested the upcoming Healing Grain batch for GI, so we do not make a batch-specific low-GI, sugar-free or diabetes-control claim. Read the official district information and consult your clinician or registered dietitian for individual dietary advice.

When will orders ship?

Orders will be accepted once the crop has been harvested, milled and the available batch is ready. The current estimate is around January 2027, subject to crop and weather.

What if an order arrives damaged or incorrect?

Our Return & Refund Policy explains the process for damaged, contaminated or incorrect items. Please report within 3 days of delivery with a photo or video.
